Do's and Don'ts
Do's
- Create goals: Work with your mentor to make goals on what you would like out of the mentorship program and set those expectations with your pair early on.
- Come prepared: to make the best of the time you have with your mentor, come to meetings with a list of things you would like to talk about/questions to ask, updates you have, etc.
- Be open to feedback: Your mentor is here to guide you in the right direction and may have feedback on what you can do to improve your medical experience as a student.
- Show initiative: Continue to seek out opportunities and stay active in getting the most of the program.
- Respect your mentor’s time: Make sure you communicate anytime you may need to cancel, provide your schedule beforehand to your mentor to ensure you are maximizing both your time and your mentor’s.
- Express gratitude: Acknowledge the time your mentor is taking out and let them know the impact that has had on your journey as a student!
Don'ts
- Don’t be passive: Engage actively and to take ownership of your growth through the program.
- Don’t contact your mentor at hours after typical “work hours” and expect an immediate response
- Don’t become overly dependent solely on your mentor for opportunities they are here to guide you
