COMMENTS AND REFLECTIONS

I first started with TCEP as a Leadership and Advocacy Fellow. I was fresh out of residency and wanted to have a bigger impact than I could only make by seeing patients, one at a time. I felt that organizations such as TCEP could be a voice to keep the path of the physician - patient relationship cleared from disruptive negative factors. I genuinely believe that each board-certified emergency physician knows the BEST way to treat and care for the patient in front of them...and they should be appropriately awarded for that financially while practicing with freedom from frivolous legal concerns, all while being supported as an integral role of our greater healthcare system. This premise led me to continue on a path to the board of directors and to my time as President of this great organization. My TCEP leadership journey allowed me to make numerous connections in Emergency Medicine and develop strong mentors. My time on the executive committee and as president was served with multiple leadership transitions for TCEP as we moved finally to some stability during my year as president. Additionally, we increased our financial reserves to a record number as we transitioned out of physical real estate with a more strategic leadership housing plan. Lastly, we transitioned to a lobby team and strong government affairs committee that has continued to give wins for Texas Emergency Medicine. I was proud of what our board and executive committee solved during my tenure and am pleased with the ongoing positive efforts and wins that TCEP maintains. I learned much about leadership, management, strategy, and politics during my tenure on the board. I also found a home in Emergency Medical Services where leadership skills I honed have led me to key appointments and leadership positions within the state. I now serve with the largest EMS company in the world where I am influential coast-to-coast on innovations in how we best care for patients when they call 911. I am confident I never would have had many of these opportunities had I not had shared time with many great leaders at the Texas College of Emergency Physicians!
