A new Texas EM residency program has been established at University Medical Center in Lubbock, a Level 1 trauma center and tertiary referral center that serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine.

The PGY1-3 program has been approved for 8 residents/year, with initial accreditation at the April RRC meeting. According to Dr. Trey Morris, Director of the program, they are accepting rotating medical students this summer and will interview this fall to take the first class in the spring 2020 Match. This facility sees approximately 85,000 patients annually in the ER and are a burn center with transfers from across West Texas and New Mexico.

The program curriculum will consist of 13 four-week blocks every year, with residents rotating through the ER 7 blocks in the PGY-1 year and 9 blocks in each of the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years. Lubbock is a college town of approximately 250,000 people and the economic and cultural hub of the South Plains. They are excited to welcome students and applicants to the program and look forward to starting in July 2020.
