June 2019

Hemant Vankawala, MD, FACEP

Since my last message, we have completed a legislative session, and continued to improve our structure and processes. Our Board will be meeting in El Paso July 20 and 21st and we have a lot to discuss.

I want to commend Dr. Theresa Tran for leading our legislative team which includes our two lobbyists, Michael Grimes and Price Ashley. They (along with many members who testified and made calls to legislators) worked hard to protect our profession and they did an outstanding job. We made a lot of headway, and already are making plans for the interim year, and next session.

About 30 TCEP members traveled to Washington DC in May for the ACEP Leadership and Advocacy training and meeting with legislators and staff about issues on the federal level. It was great to have such a large turnout from Texas (we had the second largest delegation there).

It was wonderful to attend TEXMED and to see Dr. Diana Fite elected to the position of President Elect of TMA. In addition to her leadership, Dr. Arlo Weltge was elected TMA Speaker of the House, so we have two Emergency Physicians at the top of Texas’ House of Medicine.

Several of our committees have begun working on their projects. It was great to see so many members volunteering to serve on our committees. Connect 2020 is already being planned for April 3rd and 4th in Ft. Worth. Co-Chairs of Connect 20 are Dr. Jessica Best and Dr. Sara Andrabi.

The new class for the TCEP Leadership and Advocacy Fellowship (TLAF) program has been announced (see article and photos in this issue) and will have their first meeting in July. Dr. Doug Jeffrey is the Director for the TLAF Program. The EMS committee will be planning the EMS Directors program for the statewide EMS conference in November, headed by Dr. Jeff Jarvis and Dr. Taylor Ratcliff. The membership committee (Chaired by Dr. Marvinia Charles) will be outlining some new initiatives soon.

In addition, we have two committees that are working on core responsibilities of TCEP: our bylaws and the budget. Dr. Robert Greenberg (along with Dr. Todd Taylor and committee members) are reviewing a re-write of the bylaws. TCEP is responsible for keeping our bylaws in line with ACEP, and a re-write is needed to make several of these changes. The Board will be reviewing theses changes in July.

Our annual budget is created by the Finance committee (Dr. Dan Peckenpaugh, Dr. Robert Hancock and Dr. Craig Meek) and will be reviewed and approved by the Board in July. Our fiscal year begins in July, so the Board will also review the year-end financials. Each month, the Board receives a financial report on the health of our organization and to date, it is looking very positive.

If you are interested in attending the TCEP Board meeting July 20-21 in El Paso (open to all members), please email by June 30th to RSVP.
