April 2019

Hemant Vankawala, MD, FACEP

Connect 2019 held last month in Austin was packed with education and networking opportunities. TCEP’s Education Committee made some exciting changes to the format including multiple hands-on pop-up education sessions in topics ranging from ultrasound to resuscitation. The conference was even kicked off with a rousing session of group drumming! As many of you know, the Texas Legislature only meets for a short session in the spring of every other odd year. Connect was held in Austin this year so that TCEP could combine our annual meeting with a Legislative Day. Connect closed with a dinner hosted by TCEP’s Government Relations Committee Chair Dr. Theresa Tran along with Michael Grimes and Price Ashley from TCEP’s lobby firm Imperium Public Affairs, where members received an up to the minute update on the 35 bills that most impact ER physicians and our practice. Over 40 TCEP docs then spent the day after Connect attending pre-arranged meetings with their local legislatures and staff to discuss issues important to the practice of emergency medicine in Texas. And, a great big thank you to Drs. Diana Fite, Heather Owen, Sam Roberts, Rob Hancock, Carrie De Moor, Paul Kivela, Alison Haddock, AJ Kirk, Cedric Dark, and others  who represented TCEP by testifying before the state legislature this year. With Connect ’19 in the books, TCEP’s meeting committee is beginning the planning on Connect 2020 in Ft. Worth, and I look forward to meeting many of you there.

TCEP’s next board meeting will be held July 19-21 in El Paso with agenda items to include approval of TCEP’s annual budget and new board member orientation. TCEP Board Meeting are open to all general members so shoot us an email if you would like to attend and we will make sure to save you a seat.
