January 2018

Heidi Knowles, MD, FACEP
President

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. The holidays are a time where the unique nature of Emergency Medicine really shines as we are the ones working, not only during disasters, but every day and every single night – the true safety net for our society. This month, I am seeing departments across the state stretched to their limits by the influx of patients with flu-like symptoms. Tents are going up, extra staff is being called in and hallway beds pop up in even the smallest corners of the departments (hypothetically, of course!), all so that we don't have to turn people away. I am so proud of you all, the members of our specialty, holding things together during the craziest of times.

In addition to working their normal ED shifts, your volunteer Board of Directors and Committee members have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming Annual Meeting, scheduled for April 12-15, 2018, in Houston. I want to remind everyone that we have a special, discounted “early bird” rate for registration that will be ending January 31. This year's meeting is looking to be one of the best – with exceptional speakers from across the state. Don't miss this opportunity for savings. Go to www.TCEPConnect.org for more information. While you are there, check out the New Speaker's Competition and the Research Forum – Application and Abstract Submission deadline is January 31!

At this meeting, each of you will have an opportunity to actively participate in the business of TCEP during the Annual Business Meeting, Saturday, April 14th. We will recap the accomplishments and events of this past year as well as look to the future to see what benefits TCEP will provide to you, our members. Come hear the candidates that are running for office – your vote is important as they will be representing YOU. Aspiring leaders are invited to nominate themselves or someone else for the Board of Directors – send an email today to TCEP@TexACEP.org.

Overall, 2017 was a very busy year for TCEP. We survived a very contentious legislative session, relatively unscathed. Your elected Councilors represented TCEP members at the ACEP Scientific Assembly and Council Meeting in Washington, DC. We have visited 5 of our Texas EM residency programs to introduce them to the value of TCEP as well provide some insight into the business of Emergency Medicine. Currently, we are working on reorganizing and improving the infrastructure of TCEP, which will allow us to provide additional member benefits and added value in the upcoming year. Additionally, we have been working to increase our presence in the social media world (Check out our Texas College of Emergency Physicians and Texas Emergency Physicians Facebook pages!). I am hopeful that by increasing our presence, improving our communication with you, the value of membership will become more apparent to everyone. This is an exciting time for TCEP – I hope you will join us in Houston, at TCEP Connect, to hear all about it!
