Government Relations Committee Report - Jan 2018
Share |

Happy New Year from your new Government Relations Committee chairs!

We would like to begin by thanking Dr. Diana Fite for her leadership as the Government Relations Committee's chairperson for many, many years, and for continuing to advise us as we begin our service within this role.

Politically, 2018 is an important year for TCEP. As you may already know, even-numbered years in Texas are when campaigns and elections take place. This is also when interim hearings happen, which can be considered the "behind-the-scenes" action in addressing issues that will ultimately be discussed during the odd-numbered year's legislative session. Work is already under way and we have hit the ground running this year. Emergency physicians were active at the House Insurance Committee Meeting last month, where Drs. Arlo Weltge, Carrie de Moor, and Henry Higgins provided important testimony regarding balance billing, network adequacy, and prescription monitoring.

As an organization, TCEP has three important goals in 2018:

  1. Getting officials elected who will be the most supportive to physicians, our patients, and our community
  2. Interacting with legislators during the interim to convey the importance of preserving and supporting emergency medicine in Texas
  3. Getting you (yes, YOU) involved in the process. How many of you pride yourselves on your ability to get patients admitted or to deal with consultant push-back? Just as we are often called to overcome obstacles in the emergency department to do what is best for our patients, now is the time to advocate for our profession and our patients on the legislative level.  For some, this may mean contributing to our PAC campaign. For others, it may mean meeting with legislators, giving speeches, or writing letters. Whatever your strength is, we want to involve you. Just email Theresa at theresatranbcm@gmail.com -- let's talk!

We look forward to being a resource and keeping you informed as this year unfolds, and we hope to meet you at TCEP Connect in Houston in April!

Sincerely,

Theresa Tran, M.D., M.B.A.
Bruce Moskow, M.D.
